Be sweet and take out the trash dear.
Who in the world came up with Sweetest Day? Now I'm as loving and sappy as they come, but this day's a bit much. I have, however, come up with some simple tips for a sweet Sweetest Day that are probably not the kind you have in mind. Apparently, this is the opposite of Valentine's Day and the day I'm supposed to initiate romance to my husband. With that being the case, let the love fest of a busy wife, and mom of twins and teens begin.
First off, every day I'm running around taking care of twin 4-yr olds and not pulling my hair out, or theirs, is a sweet day. And that philosophy works the other as way as well. I DO appreciate my husband, so therefore, every day that he is doing all he can to be the best husband, father, provider, friend, and head of our house is a sweet day too. Idon't need some overpriced card, candy, or meal to confirm that for me and I sure as heck am not going out to buy one either. First tip to the capitalist people or whoever came up with this day. Don't try to dupe me into buying more cards we read for five seconds and then it's my job to organize and buy containers and more crap I don't need and have to keep up with for a lifetime. "I love you honey," does the trick for me.
Now don't get me wrong. I believe in love and romance and all that good stuff. I just don't think it should be a planned day on a calendar that requires more work. Call me what you like, but days like this either mean some inflated expense or something I have to do, and quite frankly, I think I'm doing plenty. So here's a tip that doesn't require much effort.
For example, if you really want to make me feel sweet and special, or any other moms out there who I'm sure can relate to this one, try this husbands. Guard the bathroom door so we can take a bath in peace. I usually end upwith the twins standing over me in the Jacuzzi "helping me relax" as they put it, by spilling water allover the floor. Or,in mycase, my husband couldread them a story in their room so I don't have to answer every blangin question about my body parts to them as I try to bathe and get dressed. "Yes dear, that line's called a stretch mark."
Here's another one for you:You wanna get really jazzy? Take the doggone garbage out without me having to ask. There's a Sweetest Day tip for a romantic evening. I mean, I would really love to hear from some other wives. Like,is there something internal within a man that they can't take the trash out until it is absolutely overflowing? I call it the trash game. Yep, that'd be a sweet day for me.
Now, in my husband's defense, I suppose there are some sweet things I could do too, such as putting on something a little sexier than my moon and stars pajama pants and oversized Paris sweatshirt. I'm sure it'd be really sweet for him to come in the room and I'm all dolled up just for the heck of it. But for that to happen, that'd mean that the guarding of the bathroom and the emptying of the trash would have had to happen. In Facebook terms, IJS.
I guess with all the hatred in the world and crime in our city, if Sweetest Day stops some senseless act of violence and gets our youth to stop acting like deranged hoodlums for a day, I'm all for it. But if this is some candy, greeting card, make-reservations-for-an-overpriced-meal ploy, thenyou can keep it. Sweetest Day ain't at all that sweet to me.
